The INDYCAR Ministry and my Involvement

The Indy Car Ministry provides chapel services at each track where the Indy Car, Indy Lights, Pro Mazda Championship, and USF2000 series race. Chapel services include Christian music, Holy Communion, prayer, and a biblical message. We provide prayer and counseling support to drivers and team members. Bible studies are also provided at some of the race shops.

What's Your Story?

In the Winner's Circle Bible study last week and at church this Sunday, the idea of "your story" was discussed. You do not have to be a Biblical scholar or theologian to share Christ with others. You need to just tell your story of how Christ has moved in your life.

We often often miss the part of the "woman at the well" story in John 4 when John recorded in verse 39, - Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me everything I ever did.” It was because of "her story" that many came to know Christ.

Who do you need to share your story with?

How has God met your needs?

What prevents us from acknowledging God's provision for us? How does remembering God's provision in the past encourage you to trust him with your present needs? How do you think your Christian witness is affected when you don't take time to enjoy life? We discussed these questions by Max Lucado last week at the Winner's circle study.

Take some time to examine your lives and heart to acknowledge God's provisions for you this Christmas season!

Why did Jesus Turn Water to Wine?

This question was discussed in the last week's Gasoline Alley Winner's Circle Bible Study. A couple things to notice in John 2.... Mary did not ask Jesus to do this. She did not even ask him to fix the problem. She simply stated in verse 2 “They have no more wine.” But she knew He would do something. In verse 4 she instructed the servants “Do whatever he tells you.” At first look, we might assume that Jesus was just saving the wedding from disaster. Or that He was simply being obedient to his mother's implied request. Or maybe it was so he could show others He could perform a miracle....

Look at verse 11... this was the beginning of the revealing of His glory and it says, "and his disciples believed in him." His disciples were convinced at this moment that "this was the guy"!

What will it take for you to believe, to trust, to follow...... fix your eyes on Jesus....

What about Jesus' Heart?

What does Jesus' willingness to become a human being reveal about his heart? This question was from last week's Gasoline Alley Winner's Circle study.

John 17:6-8 In Jesus' prayer for disciples gives us an image of just where His heart is when it comes to those who follow him. “I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me."

Do you follow Him?

Have you received Jesus?

John 1:11-12 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—

This is an excerpt from the Gasoline Alley Bible study last week - Many people did not believe that Jesus was God's Son. What did they miss by not receiving him? What did they miss in addition to eternal life?

Have you received Jesus? If so, you are a child of God! Thanks be to the Lord!

Finish Strong

Congrats to Sage Karam and the Andretti Autosport team for their USF2000 championship!

2 Timothy 4:7 says "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." Just as this team finished strong in the USF2000 series, we are also called to finish strong in the race of life. Keep your faith in Christ strong, do not get discouraged, keep fighting, stay in the race.

Thanks for supporting the me and the IRL Ministry this year!

Thanks Cooper Tires!

For all the support you have provided me as a part of the IRL Ministry in the USF2000 series this year. Lunches, encouragement, singing, communion meditations, a place to sit, and chapel support. Thanks to the entire Cooper Tire crew. Special thanks to Rod and Nikki. You guys are a blessing from God.

Are You Thankful?

Below is an excerpt from today's chapel service message at Road Atlanta....

When Jesus had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch." Simon answered, "Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets." When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus' knees and said, "Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!" For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon's partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, "Don't be afraid; from now on you will catch men." So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him. - Luke 5:4-11

Simon Peter got it.... moments before Jesus showed up, he had one of his worst nights fishing... Then Jesus.... showed up... and they received probably one of the largest catches of their life... moments later, instead of focusing on temporal accomplishments, they turned their attention to eternal accomplishments... they followed Jesus....

Where is you hope & faith.... On temporal or eternal things? What do you thank God for?

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 - Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

"If God never does anything more than rescue you from hell, redeem your enslaved soul, and guarantee heaven on the other side, He's done enough to keep you grateful for the rest of your life; if He never does anything else. And it is the mark of the redeemed to have a grateful spirit, who are thankful in life, and grow to be thankful for the bad things. When bad things happen, trust in God. When good things happen, brag on God. Be thankful." - Dr. Joseph Stowell

Was Jesus preaching the gospel?

Had a question today that got me thinking a bit... In Luke 20:1 "On one of the days while He was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel" - what does it mean to say that Jesus was preaching the gospel?

A quick word study resulted in the NLT translation that uses "good news" instead of "gospel" and a word study of "gospel" in the NASB some of the same scriptures are referenced.

So was Jesus preaching the gospel, is it about himself... the answer is yes....
  • in Luke 22:35 Jesus referred to the Good News when he sent others
  • in Acts 8:12 Philip referred to Jesus as the good news of the kingdom of God
  • Paul refers to his mission in Romans 1:1 as the gospel of God (or Jesus Christ)
  • in John 14:6 Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life…”
  • in Mark 1:17 Mark recorded Jesus was "proclaiming the good news of God... Jesus said believe the good news and then instructed the fishermen to "come follow me" (implying he is the good news)
  • Jesus proclaimed his own life, death and resurrection in John 11: 25-26 Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"
  • so... Jesus is the Gospel
We will be talking about Luke 5 tomorrow which talks about the fishermen that dropped everything and followed Him...

so go preach the gospel, the good news of Christ...

Great Day! - Quals, Chapel, & Race!

It was a safe day of qualifying and racing today. Our chapel when very well today and was very well attended. There were many great God moments today.... When asked by one of the drivers of I could pray for him to win, I answered, "Let's pray that you will do the best of your abilities." He responded, " what if that is not enough?". I responded, "the Bible says we can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. How bout if we pray for that." He agreed. We prayed!

Do You Love Me?

Part of the chapel message today.... Jesus asked Peter in John 21:17 a very simple question…. Do you love Me?

Our natural individuality, or our natural self, boldly speaks out and declares its feelings. But the true love within our inner spiritual self can be discovered only by experiencing the hurt of this question of Jesus Christ. Peter loved Jesus in the way any natural man loves a good person. Yet that is nothing but emotional love. It may reach deeply into our natural self, but it never penetrates to the spirit of a person. True love never simply declares itself. Jesus said, “Whoever confesses Me before men [that is, confesses his love by everything he does, not merely by his words], the Son of Man also will confess before the angels of God”. – Oswald Chambers

Do you love Jesus? Is He your top priority?

God took care of me....

One of our USF2000 drivers hit the wall today after having a mechanical failure with the car. He had a fractured bone in his foot. We had a neat conversation at the hospital about God's protection. He told me "God took care of me again, didn't He?" I answered, "He sure did". He then responded "We need to keep God first".

Wow... It is refreshing to see drivers professing their faith in Christ, in the midst of a trial. Physically, he is going to be fine. Spiritually, we should follow his lead. We should keep God first.

Thanks for praying.....

Chapel Here!

Intense Weekend.......

It was a great weekend of racing at the Chicago Autobahn in Joliet, Ill . This weekend was very busy from a ministry perspective. One of our drivers “passed out” in the car, hit the wall, and had to be transported to a local hospital. Praise God he is OK, but there were a few tense moments based on the “unknown” at the time. The races were both very competitive. There were some very specific instances that required private and individual prayer this weekend. Please ask God to comfort and guide these individuals.

Thank you all for your continued support!

The Joy of Your Salvation!

Below is a brief summary of today's Chapel message front the Autobahn in Joliet, Ill. We had one on track incident that required one of our driver's to be transported to a local hospital. Through God's providential protection, he is going to be OK... Thanks for your prayers....

Joy, related to happiness - happiness requires the right circumstances where joy does not. Jesus Christ felt joy though He faced heavy trials.

The joy of Jesus was His absolute self-surrender and self-sacrifice to His Father— the joy of doing that which the Father sent Him to do as recorded in Hebrews 12:2, "Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."

The “joy set before him”….

This joy is not dependent on circumstances
This joy is everlasting
This joy is eternal

Do you have this eternal joy?

Look to Christ......

In a conversation today at the track, it was obvious that this person was looking to man, not to Christ for as an example of "what is right". I responded by saying people are just people... We need to look to Christ and his example....... It says in John 2:24-25 that "Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all men. He did not need man's testimony about man, for he knew what was in a man." Look to Christ. He is the perfect example......

The USF2000 series had two safe practice sessions today. Qualifying at 8:00AM tomorrow with the Chapel service at 10:30 and the first race of the weekend at 1:05.

Saturday NJ Update

Had a safe race today at New Jersey Motorsports Park! The second race of the weekend is tomorrow. Chapel service went well! The topic today was trust.... Below is one of the verses mentioned...

Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you - Psalm 9:10

Seek Him! Trust Him! And He, will never forsake you... What a promise!

NJ Motorsports Park!

Heading to New Jersey Motorsports Park this weekend! The USF2000 chapel service is 10:30AM on Saturday this weekend. The message this week is "Who do you Trust?" We will be talking about where or what or who do you place your trust.... Proverbs 3:5 tells us to Trust in the Lord with all your heart and not lean on your own understanding! Do you trust in the Lord? Really trust?

Thanks for your prayers this weekend!

Iowa Update

It was a full day of qualifications, chapel service, and race today. God provided through it all! The chapel service was a little loud with the Indy Cars practicing in the background. God arranged some great conversations with individuals. Some life applications were discussed and Christ was shared! Give God the glory!

The message today was "The Peace of God" Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. - Colossians 3:15

Thanks for your prayers and support!

Toto, we're not in Iowa any more!

OK, so we had a tornado warning, a thunderstorm warning, and treats of 2in dia hail with 65 mph winds. We got some heavy rain and winds but no tornados or hail. Thank God for His protection.

We had 3 practice sessions today and only had one minor incident. These USF2000 cars were averaging about 131 mph!

Had many great conversations today in the paddock area. Forgiveness, healing, God's providence, and trust were just some of the topics that were discussed with various individuals. God orchestrates these meetings and conversations. We just need to be available.

Pray for our Chapel tomorrow at 10:30 CDT...... Pray the Holy Spirit speaks...

Iowa this weekend - The Peace of God

It is an open wheel weekend in Iowa. The USF2000, Star Mazda, Indy Lights, and Indy Car will all be racing there! The USF2000 chapel is Saturday morning. The subject matter is "The Peace of God". Pray this will be well received!

Jesus died so that we may have peace.... But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. - Isaiah 53:5

May the peace of the Lord be with you this day!

Carpenter finishes 17th in 500.

It was an exciting, yet disappointing day at IMS when the #20 machine finished 17th after running as high as 4th. We had some fuel consumption issues that forced us to pit early on a yellow for a "splash & go". This caused us to give up a huge track position advantage.

It was exciting fueling the Vision Racing car. God kept everyone safe on the team as many prayers were answered. It was kinda cool that prior to the race, the team manager, know that I work with IRL Ministry, asked me to pray with team and driver prior to the race! We gathered at the car on the grid and I prayed for all involved. After the prayer was concluded, I overheard someone say, "it's kinda cool to have a Chaplain on the team."

Thanks for all your concern, prayers and support!

Great Day at ORP w/ USF2000!

The day was filled with practice, qualifications, and the race on the O'Reilly Raceway Park oval! We got through the day safely with only one incident. It was very good, competitive racing! The chapel service went well! A special shout out to the KLOVE and Air1 personnel that came out to support the IRL Ministry and worship with us! All drivers were receptive to prayer on the grid! Give God all the glory there! I was talking to one of the drivers in the care center after he was in a race incident. He said, "I really didn't want to see you again." Meaning he was not happy about being in the care center. But he then said, "I am glad you're here." Then he started digging into his fire suit pocket and pulled out a crinkled up business card. He said, "I won't race without this." It was my business card I gave him yesterday when I met him for the first time! I hope he doesn't misunderstand, but it is not me he needs, but God. Don't live life without God! Thanks for your support!

Carb Day & ORP!

Went great! No issues or problems. Headed to ORP in the afternoon for USF2000 practice.

Laguna Seca - Update!

The chapel went well today! We completed both races without major incidents! Praise the Lord! Some comments from today.... Are you going to pray with me? Thanks for making sure I knew when chapel was. I was led by God to be a part of it. It is awesome that this series has a Chaplain. Did you pray with my son in the car? I called my wife and told her I went to church. Did you pray will every driver? You don't have to go oversees to be a missionary. Thank you for doing this. I want to contribute to this. You will see the fruit from this. That is what we do (referring to prayer at the drivers meeting).

There was a great deal of encouragement from the Lord through others this weekend. It was unbelievable. Thanks for your prayerful support! Check back for pictures from the weekend!

Saturday, May 22, 2010

Are you going to pray with me?

That question was asked of me today by one of the USF2000 drivers after qualifications. He wanted to make sure that prior to the races tomorrow, that I was going to pray with him in the car. I responded by saying, "Absolutely, I will be there to pray with you." Do you think God ever wonders if we are going to pray? Do you think He longs for our communication with Him? How many time have you hesitated when you thought you should pray?

Praying without ceasing is your attitude toward God on a daily basis. God wants to hear from you. He wants your attitude to be proper. He wants your heart.

I will pray with that driver before the each race tomorrow. I will also pray I have a prayerful attitude toward God each and every day, without ceasing.

USF2000 in Laguna Seca Today!

Made it safely to Monterey, CA! Practice sessions went well today at Laguna Seca. I met with all of the teams, including the Pacific F2000 teams. Generally well received, with a couple of exceptions..... Pray that relationships will be established! Qualifications are tomorrow, with 2 races on Sunday. The Chapel service is Sunday morning at 7:30AM... Pray I will be led by the Spirit in all things! Blessings!

Thursday, May 20, 2010

Heading to Laguna Seca!

Pray for me and my wife as we had to Laguna Seca, CA today. The USF2000 series is racing there this weekend with the ALMS series.

Pray for Austin

Yesterday at IMS we worked with Kingdom Racing to bring Austin to the track for an "up close" look at the activity. Austin has Cystic Fibrosis and has struggled with it since birth. He is a huge race fan and was excited to meet drivers, Raphael Matos and Davey Hamilton. We were introduced to Austin by a member of Indian Creek Christian Church through a series of encounters orchestrated by God. Pray for Austin as he struggles everyday for breath.

How do you get to Heaven?

That was asked of me today at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway from a fan holding a beer.... I have been at IMS the past few days reconnecting with many of the Indy Car crew guys and staff... So, i asked if he wanted the long answer or the short answer.... He responded, "short answer". I said, "have faith in Jesus Christ". That's it. Have faith. Do you have faith? Does it have to be more difficult than that? Sometimes we make it more complicated than it has to be. It starts with faith....

For it is by grace that you have been saved through faith - Ephesians 2:8

Pray for that fan..... Thanks and thank God for His saving grace!

Reach up.........

What a great weekend.... God was present. God was near.....

With the second race (and first official weekend) complete for the USF2000 series this morning, I had a thought as I was praying with the drivers today..... As I approached one of the cars, the driver, who was strapped in the cockpit, reached his hand up when he saw me getting closer. That struck me.... How often do we reach up to God? Do we reach up when we are in need or when we are in trouble? Do we reach up to God when we are afraid or anxious?

James 4:8 tells us to "Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you." Are you waiting on God? God is waiting on you.... He wants you to come to Him. He wants to draw near to you. He wants a closer relationship with you. Draw near to God........ Reach up......

Thanks for prayin'........

Saturday, March 27, 2010

Do you really pray with every driver?

That was the question I was asked when the USF2000 cars were on their pace lap.... I replied, "yes, every one" They said, "I have never seen that before!" Every one...... everyone. What if we were able to pray with everyone we came in contact with? What if we even thought that way? Something to think about...

The day went absolutely fabulous. The first USF2000 race and the first USF2000 Chapel both went very well. There were many moments where I saw the hand of God working. I met a lady and her husband that work for Cooper tires (the USF2000 tire supplier). They are Christians and she "happens" to sing. She also "happened" to have her guitar with her in the truck (she told me she did not know why she put it in her truck). I asked her if she wanted to sing at our chapel service. She wanted to know what songs I was thinking about. Well, I had already printed out the words to "Jesus Messiah" for an opening song. She "happened" to have just worked that one up! God is good, really good. She sang two songs for our chapel service. It was awesome, but so is God.....

The Lord provided safety for every one involved with the races. They were run very professionally. The series is off to a great start!

I had many people in the Indy Car Paddock area congratulate and encourage me today. Many people told me they were praying for me and the IRL Ministry. Thank you all your support. We appreciate your prayers more than you will ever know! Keep praying! Because after today, I know God is listening......

Making Your Hope a Reality

Below is an exerpt from my message in today's USF2000 chapel service. Read down the list. Are you missing any if these in your Christian walk?

How can we make our hope a reality?

1. Have faith in Christ and His resurrection.
1 Peter 1:3 - In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

2. Trust God in His plan for your life.
Romans 15:13 - May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

3. Put confidence in the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Let God..........

Thanks for all your prayerful support! It was a great day of introductions and getting to know some of the owners, drivers, and crew members from the teams. I feel most of the time we worry WAY TOO MUCH about things that God has under control. That anxiousness and worry does not accomplish anything other than draining us mentally. Let God take control. Follow, don't lead. Wait on Him. Trust. Thank. Let. God.............

In St. Pete!!!

Made it safely to St. Pete this evening! I will be at the track tomorrow meeting with the USF2000 teams! Through some of shop visits, I have met a few of the teams and team owners already. Pray as I introduce the myself and the IRL Ministry to some of the teams for the first time.

I heard a verse this morning that I really liked. I wrote it on my hand so I would not forget it. Then I wrote it on a post it note and stuck it in my pocket. I was going to look it up today at work. It got busy at work and I forgot about it. Until I emptied my pockets tonight in the hotel room. There was the note with "Ps 18:39" scratched on it. I am not sure why God gave me this verse, this day and kept it with me..... but it says:

39For You have girded me with strength for battle; You have subdued under me those who rose up against me.

As Christians we enter a battle field every day. Most times the enemy cannot be seen. Praise God, that He is on our side! Another version says that He "armed me". With God adding to our "arsenal", we cannot loose!!

Doc will be missed....

I was honored to officiate at Doc Kerr's funeral yesterday, 3/13. In your memories of Doc, there will be tears. There will be sorrow. There will be pain. Replace the pain with memories. Replace the sorrow with laughter. Replace the tears with hope.

What if....

While it was very unfortunate that Vision Racing closed its doors a few weeks ago, most of the guys in the Bible study have found new positions with other teams. Since that time, I have had multiple conversations with these guys to possibly start new studies at some of these different shops! Please pray that God will work the logistics of these studies and these shops!

What if.... we trust God and let Him work....

That "Prayer Thing" Really Works....

I was talking with one of the guys from Vision Racing that recently lost his job. He was really worried about finding a job, etc. in this tough racing economy. I told him I would be praying specifically for him and his job search. He called me a few days ago and said, "that prayer thing really works, doesn't it". I agreed! He went on to tell me about his new position with another IRL team. With the new job, he will not have to travel (a big deal in the racing community). I told him that we are always to trust God's plan....

Pray specifically. Pray expectantly. Prayer works. Give it a try! God is waiting to hear from you....

Shop Visits on Monday

I will be making a couple USF2000 shop visits on Monday. This will be a good opportunity to get to meet and talk to the team owners and crew guys face to face. This will also give me an opportunity to introduce them to the IRL Ministry and what they can expect from us at the track.

Pray that the minstry is well recieved and the Holy Spirit leads and guides me. Blessings!

Vision Racing Suspending Operations

Please pray for the owner and employees of Vision Racing as it was announced this week that they were suspending operations. Pray that they will find employment quickly. We are currently thinking of ways that we can keep the Bible Study going that we had been holding in that shop.

New Year - New Series - New Oppotunites!

Happy New Year! I had a great Christmas celebrating Christ's birth with family and friends!

God has great things in store for 2010! The Indy Racing League announced before the end of the year that they will be the sanctioning body for a new series called the USF2000!http://www.indycar.com/news/index.php?story_id=15545

This series will be a feeder series that is part of the "Road to Indy" . It will give younger drivers a path through the Mazda series and Indy Lights to one day complete in the Indy Car series.

I am also excited to announce that I will be the Chaplain for the USF2000 series! I will be traveling to all of their events to provide a ministry presence from the IRL Ministry. There will be Chapel services, prayer support, and critical incident support at all of the venues.

Please pray for me as I prepare for this new challenge! Thanks for all your support! See link below for the USF2000 website.
